16 movies featured in French Film Festival 2017

The French Film Festival in Malaysia is back, this time with a little special something.

There is going to be a meet-and-greet session in Kuala Lumpur with actor, director and screenwriter Gustave Kervern.

Cinemagoers with a ticket for the May 5 screening of The Fabulous Patars at Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) Pavilion KL are in for a treat as Kervern will be fielding questions after the heartwarming family comedy.

Now in its 16th edition, the film festival remains the cornerstone of Le French Festival. The festival itself has expanded to include music, dance, performance art, architecture and gastronomic pursuits. This year, it offers 16 movie selections with two titles, The Fabulous Patars and The Summer Of All My Parents, screened for free.

Comedies and dramas make up more than half the movie selection in this year’s French Film Festival, with a couple of thrillers, biopics and animation rounding up the programme.

Organised by Alliance Francaise and the Embassy of France in Malaysia, the festival is supported by Institut Francais and presented by Martell. This year also marks the first time the festival is presented in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

The French Film Festival will kick off in GSC Pavilion KL, Mid Valley Megamall and 1Utama in the Klang Valley (May 4 to May 21) before moving to GSC Gurney Plaza in Penang (May 25 to June 4) and GSC Suria Sabah in KK (June 8 to June 11).

“We aim to have as much variety as possible in our effort to showcase the diversity of French culture in the films we select,” says Jean-Pierre Dumont, director of Alliance Francaise de Kuala Lumpur.

“There is an emphasis on cross-cultural exchange and we select films that we think will appeal to the audience. We always try to include a number of comedies, because we think comedies are able to convey many messages in a nice way!”
